On Saturday, 17 June 2006, the Eritrean Community in the UK held its annual Sports Day at Finsbury Park in North London. This was an all day event and consisted of a number of different activities such as basketball, football and running race.

The event was a great success with record numbers in attendance on the day. A great variety of attractions were on the program to suit all age groups. The children enjoyed a number of sport activities, as well as face painting and bouncing castles. Awet Haile, who brought his seven years old niece to the event said: “I’ve never seen this many Eritrean children in one place in my life. We’ve all enjoyed ourselves. I wish we could have more of this kind of events, because the vast majority of our community in the UK are now the children and the activities we do, must reflect that.”

The Eritrean Ambassador to the United Kingdom and Ireland, HE Negasi Sengal also took part on the event. The winning teams and individuals were presented with certificates, medals and trophies, which was handed out by the Ambassador. The event was concluded with people dancing in the park to Eritrean songs that were performed by Okbay Mesfun.

The event was organised by the Eritrean Youth Association in the UK as part of the 2006, Eritrean Festival in the UK.
