Eritreans in the UK Meet Olympic Marathon Silver Medalist, Meb Keflezghi

Eritreans in the UK met Olympic Marathon Silver Medalist, Meb Keflezghi, in Adulis Restaurant. Meb was accompanied by his wife Yordanos, their daughter Sara and Director of Operations, Hawi Management. Present were members of ERA (Eritrean Relief Association) Youth Association, AGE, Y-P.F.D.J., children group and volunteers who are running (for ERA project) at the London 10k to raise funds to provide powder milk for babies born to mothers infected with HIV/AIDS and for  training and assistance to parents with autistic children.

Meb was unable to complete the course at the London marathon due to Sore and blister on his aquiline. Meb and his family were warmly thanked for taking time out to meet with their adoring fans at Adulis restaurant at a very short notice. Meb politely thanked every one who came there and was impressed with the organization of the evening. And he praised the efforts made by ERA in helping projects in Eritrea as well as people who adopt a martyr’s family.

Meb brought the medal he won in Athens to show it to the adoring fans. The inscription, which in Greek, was translated into [You have now achieved your dream goal in athletics, in the highest level]. Then the podium was given for the four 9 year old Simon, who would like to become a journalist and his friends to interview Meb. Meb was asked if he experienced any prejudice because of his race, how long he intends to run professionally, what keeps him motivated and many more questions. Meb answered all the questions eloquently and passionately. His advice was well received by the youngsters and over hearing adults.

All his adoring fans took pictures with Meb. He also signed autographs for a good 30 minutes. Meb spoke of the Eritrean American Athletics Federation its formation and growth from time to time and the assistance and bilateral relations. He will be going to Eritrea and do more follow ups and discussions with other fellow athletes and also trainers. Last but not least he was amazed by the drive to introduce the Hi-Viz Jackets [sederyas] into Eritrea for every road user especially sports men and women. His autography on the jackets reads To: Hiwinnet Safety First for [Eritrean] our athletes…Run To Win Meb.  Hiwinnet is the group of volunteers who are working with various organizations like ERA, EYAUK and YPFDJ to introduce the safety jackets. Meb also signed autographs for all the young Eritreans in the UK that read “Thank you for all your support and keep working hard to do your best.”

Everyone was pleased with the evening’s event and expressed their admiration for Meb’s successes and the passionate love and respect he has for his family, people and country. Meb also thanked Seble for all her hard work to make the great evening happen.
