UN Resolution Creates Anger and Shock

Eritreans are expressing their strong opposition to the latest UN Security Council resolution on the border dispute between Eritrea and Ethiopia. The resolution threatens sanction against Eritrea and Ethiopia if either uses force to settle the dispute. It also threatens Eritrea with sanction for its grounding of UN helicopters.

Sense of shock

The resolution appears to have created anger and sense of shock in the Eritrean communities across the world. Dr. Bereket Fessehatzion told Meadna News: “I am dumbfounded, just like any other Eritrean or right thinking human being in the world would be, by the latest UN Security Council resolution, which is lopsided and aimed at the victim rather than the culprit,”

“War can not be averted by perpetuating no-war no-peace stance, which is what this resolution seeks to attain at best or punish Eritrea, the victim at worst,” he added.

UN’s Failure

Eritreans are concerned about the resolution’s failure to address the underlining cause of the present crises, which is Ethiopia’s refusal to accept a legally-binding bordered demarcation. The Algiers Peace Agreement that was signed by both counties five years ago provides for sanction if any of the counties refuse to accept the final and binding ruling. However, the UN Security Council resolution did not threaten Ethiopia for its refusal of demarcation of the border. Mike Seium, an Eritrean American, Television Producer, said “Instead of addressing the real cause of the present crises by forcing Ethiopia to put the pillars up, with this resolution the UN is only creating more problems for the Horn Africa region.”

Rahel Habtegiorgis, an Eritrean from the UK, said “I am extremely furious about the way the United Nation is handling the border problem, it is very clear that they are trying to upbraid Eritrea regardless of what is right or wrong,”

“I am sure they are negligently aware what this will lead on. The dangerous result of this impairment both countries and cause a great deal of destruction in the region. If that will be the UN will be held responsible,” she added.

Historical blunder

Tesfalem Mekonen, a Network Engineer, said: “This is a political motivated resolution; the Security Council has deliberately avoided addressing the main issue.  Several decades ago the UN decided the future of our country against the will of its people and for the interest of the super powers, and we all know what the result of that was.  It is really sad to see history repeating it self.”

H. Aklilu, a student of London Metropolitan University, who called the resolution a “historical blunder” told Meadna News: “the resolution is a UN’s historical blunder, and indeed if you are not part of the solution then you are part of the trouble.”

Eritreans in Europe and North America are contacting members of parliament/congress to voice their opposition to the UN resolution and call for international community to compel Ethiopia to respect its treaty obligations and the rule of law, and ensure the implementation of the final and binding Algiers Peace Agreements. Eritreans in the UK will also stage a demonstration on Monday, December 12, 2005.
